Darlene Flynn, M.S.W., P.S.W., Psychotherapist
Individual, Couple and Family Therapist
I have always had a strong interest in learning about people, their culture, and their values. This curiosity and my love for working with people led me to pursue my studies in Social Work at McGill University, obtaining a clinical Master’s degree and the McGill Alumni Award for Clinical Excellence. I can offer therapy and counselling services to individuals, couples or families in both English and French.
I believe in every one’s capacity to grow, change and gain greater personal fulfillment. I feel privileged to be able to facilitate this process. Also, it is very important for me to offer an atmosphere that is non-judgmental in my sessions. This way my clients can feel safe to explore areas of their life that may be causing them personal confusion, pain or distress. I work from a systemic perspective, which means I consider the whole individual within the context of their larger environment. I also believe in the each client’s capacity to decide what is best for him or her.
My clinical style is ‘down to earth’ and I have extended training in various approaches. This allows me to adapt my services to what is best suited to my client’s needs. I can help with a wide range of concerns or difficulties including: depression; anxiety; self-esteem issues; parent – child relational difficulties; parental skills; blended family issues; communication problems; parent – teen conflict; child behavioural problems; divorce and separation; and co-parenting for after divorce to name a few.
As a mother of four, I believe strongly in the value of ‘Family’ and over the years I have focused my clinical experience and knowledge on working with individuals and their families. I have worked in child psychiatry at the Montreal Children’s Hospital, the Allen Memorial Institute and the Douglas Hospital in Montreal. As well, I have worked in various CLSC’s providing psychosocial services to children and their families, plus being involved in the creation and development of community support and psycho-educational groups such as Family Net and Co-Parenting through Divorce and Separation. I continue to work in the public sector and offer services in private practice on a part-time basis since 2001.
I am a member of the Professional Order of Social Workers and adhere to professional guidelines and a code of ethics. I participate in professional seminars and training sessions, subscribe to professional journals, and read extensively to maintain my knowledge current and pertinent to today’s reality. Please feel free to contact me if you feel my services may be of help to you, if you have any questions or would just like more information.
